What Is A Great Producer?
A great producer...
Maintains the essence of the artist.
Motivates people to give their best perfomance. This can vary from artist to artist. One artist may need a kind, gentle touch, and another might need a kick in the butt, to get them motivated to do their best. The producer must be able to tell which approach will yield the best results.
Either finds the nexus beween the artist and the market, or helps the artist create their own new market.
Is a VERY good listener.
Is a great editor who know when people have given the best performance they possibly can, and how to fix it if they haven't.
Understands how to balance both fun and work.
Knows music inside out, understands thory and harmony, and can help with musical and vocal arrangements.
Is a very good communicator who can can make themselves understood quickly and totally.
Speaks at least three languages: "musician" (so they can talk to players), "tech" (so they can talk to engineers), and at least one other language, such as English or Spanish (so they can talk to everyone else).
Is abreast of all the latest technolgy and techniques, as well as knowing the traditional ("Old School") technolgy and techniques, and know which ones are appropriate to use in a given situation.
Knows and understands talent, and has a large database of players, singers, engineers, arrangers, etc., but can also do those jobs well themselves if needed.
Sees both the "big picture", and every last nuance and detail.
Is a "Pitch Freak" and "Time Freak", and won't allow bad pitch or time to mar a recording, unless it's intentional.
Understands how recordings are mixed and mastered, and can either mix and master themselves, or have the communication skills to get the mix or mastering engineer on the same "wavelength" immediately.
Both feels the "art" and knows the "science", and has a healthy mix of the two.
Operates for the good of the song.
